Questions (and Sometimes Answers) About Todd Ogasawara's
PocketPC.com articlesEvery now and then I get a question about an article I've written for Microsoft's PocketPC.com Club Pocket PC. I'll try to provide answers to questions I get in the mail on this page. Sometimes, though, my answer will simply be I don't know or I made an mistake. I apologize in advance for any and all such responses. The Q&As below are listed in chronological order. The most recent Q&A is at the top of the page. Note: In general, I have not changed any spelling, punctuation, or grammar of the e-mail sent to me and reproduced below. NEW! Click here to see the most recent Q&As built using HanDBase & XML I'm working on adding new features and moving over the Q&A items from this legacy page to the new page over the next few weeks. Database Applications (& Moving from a
Palm) A: A good place to start your research is Jason Dunn's Pocket PC Database Options article on PocketPC.com. The only database I've used on the Palm or Pocket PC is HanDBase. So, I'm sorry to say I can't provide a good comparison of the various options available. However, it looks like Pocket DB and Pocket Database might be the first two products you should investigate since they both claim to be able to deal with Access databases. HandyDB and Visual CE also merit investigation. Synchronizing Birthdates A: I'm not quite sure what you are asking. What would a serial connection to a projector do? You could not transmit video over such a connection. If you want to display the Pocket PC's video image via a projector, you may want to investigate the ColorGraphic Voyager VGA PCMIA card (work only with a Compaq iPAQ and PC Card sleeve). Synchronizing Birthdates A: (1) You do not provide enough information to start diagnosing the problem. However, in general, the Birthdate field in Contacts does appear to behave erratically. I've seen some birthdates appear a half-dozen times based on a single entry in Contacts. I recommend using the All Day Event option in Calendar to note birthdates instead. (2) The most recent update for ActiveSync 3.1 is dated August 30, 2000. You can find the download on this linked PocketPC.com page. MSN SPA-POP3 E-mail (again!) A: The SMTP address should be changed from the secure.smtp.email.msn.com recommended in my article to smtp.email.msn.com. You don't provide enough information in your e-mail for me to understand the nature of your problem. You should read through my brief MSN E-Mail Problems article on my personal web site to learn if any of those reasons are related to your problem. Fellowes PDA Survival Kit A: I bought the kit from Amazon.com. Unfortunately, it looks like Amazon does not carry that specific product anymore. However, they do carry the various kit components as individual product items. I recommend the Brainwash item. It works well on my various Pocket PC and Handheld PC screens. HP660LX Handheld PC & Word/Excel A: First, you may find it difficult to find an upgrade kit at this late date. I never receive attachments via my Handheld (or Pocket) PC. However, I do not believe Inbox itself has any conversion features. Pocket Word and Excel, however, can export to various desktop file formats. I have not tried to bring in desktop formatted files except via ActiveSync or RTF (for Word) files. MSN E-mail & Hotmail A: No, you can't do that. MSN E-mail and Hotmail are totally different services. See my 12/14/00 response to this same issue. MSN E-mail vs. MSN Explorer Situation: The last step proved to be a two day affair before I got part of it working. What I found out is: 1) that I will not be able to use the pop3 feature of the MSN Email for
PocketPC since I converted my MSN account to Web-based, and Now with "secure" removed, I can send but not receive email from my inbox with MSN as a new Service. Tech person told me that I will have to use my PPC IE to access the MSN web site to retrieve email. As you know, it is much more difficult to navigate the small screen on a web site that the INBOX. Prior to MSN I had a local ISP whose service was exceptional locally but not nationally. But even with my local ISP, the reason I switched was that I could not use INBOX as a POP3 server because my local smtp service required authentication. And as you know, there is no box to check for that on the setup in INBOX. What a crock! I do not understand why MS would put the software out on the market if they knew it would not work. I've gone through your directions and those of MS and have read all sorts of msgs from discontents who are finding one problem or another with the MSN Email for PPC. A: I've documented the MSN Explorer issue in my MSN E-mail for Pocket PC commentary on this web site. I'll document the SMTP changes in an update to that page. MSN SPA-POP3 e-mail and the MSN Explorer e-mail issues are perennial thorns in the sides of Windows CE users in general. Handheld PC owners still can't retrieve MSN SPA-POP3 e-mail! It is one of those cases of the left-hand not knowing what the right-hand is doing. ActiveSync Tips, Tricks, & Tweaks article
correction A: You are quite right! Thank you for catching my error! Casio E-115/125 Bi-fold and Flip-top Carrying
Cases A: Both cases (bi-fold and flip-top) for the Casio E-115/125 in the photograph you mention were purchased directly from Casio: Casio Accessories Link. Finding AvantGo Modem Sync A: It is the same on all Pocket PCs. You probably just missed seeing the extremely tiny lettering. Click on AvantGo on your default Pocket Internet Explorer home page. Scroll to the bottom of the page. [Note: You may have to click a linked text first since AvantGo now has an annoying full page advertisement that displays the first time you go to the AvantGo page after a sync]. Tools is in a tiny gray colored font near the bottom of the page. NSBasic/CE for Beginners Connecting a Handheld PC to the Internet A: You have not provided enough information begin to diagnose the problem. Refer to my article Using MSN as Your Internet Service Provider. Although it is mostly aimed at MSN subscribers, the information is useful to anyone attempting to use a Handheld or Pocket PC with the Internet. Jason Dunn's Configuring Your Dial-up Connection article may help you with specifics even though his advice is specifically for Pocket PC users. Pocket Calendar A: I am not privy to the future plans for Pocket Calendar. And, if I were, I would not be at liberty to discuss them. That said, I have heard this desire to separate personal and business appointments and contacts when syncing. Perhaps some enterprising 3rd party developer can produce an add-on to deal with this situation. ActiveSync A: You don't provide enough information for diagnosis. I suggest you try the Microsoft ActiveSync Synchronization Troubleshooter. Pocket Inbox Attachments on CF Card A: I assume that you had previously set Inbox to save attachments to your 48MB CF card. If so, copy that directory & files to the new 192 CF card. Otherwise in Pocket Inbox: Tools, Options, Storage (tab), uncheck Store Attachments on storage card MSN Access A: The MSN E-Mail Client for Pocket PCs patches Pocket Inbox to work with MSN's unique (and annoying) Secure Password Authentication POP3 feature. It has nothing to do with the problem you describe. I don't see enough information to diagnose the problem. I suggest you read my article Using MSN as Your Internet Service Provider. If you still have a problem, I suggest visiting one of the many Pocket PC newsgroups or messageboards for additional guidance. GPS Maps for Paris, France A: Unfortunately, I do not follow application internationalization issues at all. I have not seen any Pocket PC GPS software with maps outside of the 48 contiguous continental United States. Pocket Inbox MSN E-mail Add-on A: Read my PocketPC.com article The Key to MSN Connections: MSN/user name. The MSN/ prefix should only be placed in the modem connection login sequence. Only your username should be placed in the Pocket Inbox configuration. Please refer to Jason Dunn's PocketPC.com article Configure Your Pocket PC for POP-3 E-mail. Connecting Multiple Devices to a Single Desktop PC A: The devices are all connected simultaneously. However, I only sync one at a time. bSQUARE Messenger A: bSQUARE no longer sells software directly to individual consumers. Thus, they removed the links to previously provided applications. The article was written before bSQUARE announced/implemented this decision. ActiveSync A: If you are saying that you consider your Pocket PC your PIM master and the desktop PC its companion/backup, I understand your point completely. I look at it exactly the same way. Microsoft, however, does not apparently. I mentioned this point of view when I had a chance to meet with some of the Pocket PC development in the Fall of 2000. Some of them found this view interesting. I do not know if we will see an option in ActiveSync to let us clear away the desktop PIM and replace it with our Pocket PC's master PIM data in the future. That is certainly what I would like to see myself! Pocket Streets A: Those maps for 2000 are no longer available. You can, of course, make your own maps using Streets & Trips 2000. The 2001 version maps can be found at: http://www.microsoft.com/mobile/pocketpc/downloads/streets.asp ActiveSync A: (1) Why aren't you using the faster USB sync interface? (2) You may want to consider using a PC Card adapter that fits the Type II MicroDrive and move files via a PCMCIA reader adapter or a notebook PC with a PC Card (PCMCIA) slot. AvantGo A: I've had problematic encounters with this issue myself. Sometimes you can configure the Applet Mobile Link Control Panel applet with the appropriate settings, account name, and password to get through a proxy server/firewall. Other times, I have not. It seems to depend on how a particular proxy server is configured by the systems adminstrator. Your specific issue is dealt with on AvantGo's web site at http://avantgo.com/help/pocketpchelp/pocketpcsupport/errorcodes.html#5453 Ilium ListPro A: I am not quite sure what you are seeing. I see the category pull-down menu when I edit an item. You can check with Ilium Software's (ListPro's developer) support area at http://www.iliumsoft.com/support.htm Transcriber A: My understanding is that Transcriber is not available in several (all?) internationalized Pocket PC versions. You may want to refer to the public German Microsoft Windows CE/Pocket PC newsgroup for further clarification. Media Player/Media Manager A: My understanding is that Microsoft now recommends using Windows Media Player 7.0 for Windows 98/Me/2000 instead of Windows Media Manager. Wireless Access A: It depends on (1) which AT&T Wireless service you are referring to and (2) which Sierra Wireless AirCard you are referring to. 1. AT&T has two completely different wireless services and I don't know which one you are asking about. Are you referring to their TDMA voice wireless service or their CDPD data-only wireless service. If the former, the answer is a definite no. If the latter, the answer is yes if you are referring specifically to the AirCard 300. 2. If you are referring to either the AirCard 400 (Ricochet 128Kbps) or AirCard 510 (CDMA), then the answer is definitely no. Pocket Inbox MSN E-mail Add-on Connection MSN Server: secure.smtp.email.3msn.com A: You have the POP3 and SMTP entries reversed. Transcriber A: I have not tried to install Transcriber on a Compaq iPAQ (nor do I want to do so to be honest). Try performing a soft-reset on the iPAQ before attempting to install Transcriber. Pocket Streets A: You are not missing anything. The problem is with my article. It was written when the Pocket PC was still in beta-testing. At the time, it supported Streets & Maps 2000. The format changed between 2000 and 2001. The Pocket Streets download available from the Microsoft Pocket PC downloads site is only compatible with Streets & Trips 2001. Pocket Inbox MSN E-Mail Add-on/Hotmail A: MSN's POP3 based e-mail and Hotmail are totally different services. Hotmail is a web-based e-mail service. The only PC-based client/application that can deal with Hotmail is Outlook Express 5. No Pocket PC based application can directly access Hotmail's message store. The only way you can view Hotmail on your Pocket PC is by accessing the http://www.hotmail.com web site as you would on a desktop PC. CompactFlash Card Reader A: You should consult with the manufacturer of the device you purchased since they would be in the best position to supply such a driver. In general, I have found that Windows NT 4.0 did not have a lot of drivers commonly found for Windows 98. You may find that upgrading to Windows 2000 (if that is a viable option) may solve your problem. CompactFlash Card A: You need to create a My Documents folder on your CompactFlash card (or MMC) and place files in that folder or sub-folders under My Documents on the CF card. Transcriber A: Your HP Jornada 720 is a Handheld PC 2000 device and not a Pocket PC. Transcriber only works on Pocket PC devices. However, it ships with all copies of ActiveSync 3.1 CD-ROM discs. Voice Notes 1. Allow you to edit voice notes and use bookmarks to identify sections of a recording? I would really like to build one long voice recording (I have the microdrive) that would contain all the pertinent parts of a patient's admission record. Then, when the patient is discharged, I would simply replay the voice record into the phone for the transcriptionist. Any help would be appreciated. A: I'm sorry. I don't know the answer to that. However, here is a web site that might be able to provide you with more information: MedicalPocketPC.com AvantGo A: I've seen that problem too. The way I fix the problem is to sync AvantGo at my desktop PC. Available Memory A: Try a soft-reset. If that doesn't help, then you should definitely use Explorer to look through your HP to see if you really deleted them. Alternatively, did you delete them from your CompactFlash card? If so, it would not affect System RAM available space. Voice Notes A: That is true if you create a voice note outside of a text memo. My instructions, however, are valid if you embed a voice note in a text memo. |
